About Jane-sensei (teacher)
Jane-sensei first started studying ikebana of the Sogetsu School in the 1970's in a class at the Smithsonian Associates, and after that class continued to study. In 1978, she was certified as a sensei (teacher) at the Yonkyu level by Sogetsu Headquarters in Tokyo. After that, she taught at Open University and then for the Smithsonian Associates for many years, in addition to her private classes. While studying with Mary Sugiyama, Director of the Sogetsu School in the United States, she continued to move to more levels of study as a teacher, and in 2001, Sugiyama Sensei recommended to Sogetsu Headquarters that she be promoted to Riji, the top grade for a sensei. She has been President of Ikebana International (2007-2009) and also Director of the Washington, D.C. Sogetsu Branch. She has presented demonstrations of Sogetsu ikebana in various locations, such as
Asheville, N.C.; Richmond, Virginia; Montana; and Baltimore, Maryland. She continues to teach in the DC area and in Richmond, Virginia.
