Celebrating AAPI Month at the Asian Heritage Festival in Fairfax County
contributed by Miwako Horisawa
May is recognized nationwide as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Across the country—and in the DMV area, numerous events are held to honor this vibrant diversity.
On Saturday, May 24th, Fairfax County hosted its annual Asian Heritage Celebration in Annandale, and we were proud to be a part of it once again. This is the second year that SJA participated in this festival.
Our team set up an origami booth, where visitors had the chance to explore the origami arts. Our origami instructors guided participants of all ages—some trying it for the first time, others already familiar with the craft. It was a joy to see so many curious and enthusiastic individuals fully engaged and enjoying experiences.
Amidst a day filled with colorful performances, cultural demonstrations, and delicious food, we were grateful for the opportunity to share a piece of Japanese culture with the broader community. The experience was both rewarding and inspiring, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s celebration!
