Kimono Demonstration at Yorktown High School

On November 10th, SJA partnered with the Japanese Club at Yorktown High School to host a kimono education event led by Hideko Uchiyama.

About twenty students attended the event and watched as a fellow student professionally donned a kimono, observing the careful layering, obi-tying, and finishing touches involved in the traditional dressing process. Uchiyama also taught students about the kimono's cultural history and contemporary traditions, ranging from different levels of formality and the occasions on which the garment is worn today.

By the end of the meeting, students left with a newfound appreciation of kimonos (and lots of pictures!).

As co-president of the Japanese Club at Yorktown, I’m excited to continue partnering with SJA to bring more cultural experiences like this to our community.
