SJA’s First Origami Basics and Teaching Workshop
by Naoko Kamioka
On August 23rd, SJA held a workshop at Arlington Central Library to show origami basic foldings/bases and teaching methods for those interested in teaching how to fold origami at school, cultural events, community and other activities, or at home to children, etc.
Why? SJA’s one of primary missions is to spread Japanese culture including origami. Training of those interested in promoting origami multiplies SJA’s efforts.
The workshop attracted over 30 participants - a way more than expected. The workshop started with a brief introduction of SJA, its origami activities, and the opportunities to volunteer. Then came the history of origami, followed by hands-on sessions to learn basic folds and bases. Building on each fold/base, the participants created some shapes, such as a rabbit face, a swan, a crane, and a balloon.
The participants were very attentive and eager to learn. When they finished the workshop with various origami figures at hand, all had smiles on their faces with joy and a sense of accomplishment.
SJA may plan another training workshop of this kind if there is a demand. Anyone interested, please let us know!
